The U.S. opioid epidemic is out of control, one of the nation’s top public health officials told a U.S. Senate panel. This epidemic “is one of the few public health problems that is getting worse instead of better,” testified Dr. Debra Houry, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control.

“We need all hands on deck” to fight this epidemic, added Dr. Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health, in her own sobering testimony. After hearing from these doctors,U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander, the committee’s chairman, said: “The opioid crisis is tearing our communities apart, tearing families apart, and posing an enormous challenge to health providers and law enforcement officials.”
